Shu is een typisch Japanse jongen, maar heeft een onverslaanbare, optimistische en vastberaden instelling. Wanneer hij echter een mysterieus meisje met vreemde ogen genaamd Lala-Ru op een schoorsteen ziet, wordt hij al snel meegetrokken in een vreemde woestijnwereld. Shu ontdekt al snel de ware verschrikkingen van de oorlog, waaronder genocide, brute martelingen, honger, dorst en uitbuiting van kinderen. Nu probeert Shu Lala-Ru en zijn zuurverdiende en vaak onwillige nieuwe vrienden te redden van de krankzinnige dictator Hamdo. Of Shu er ooit in zal slagen de mensen om wie hij geeft te redden en tegelijkertijd vast te houden aan zijn waarden valt nog te bezien.
