Geoloog Theo Lytton, zijn neefje Jonas, de rijke Alice Hastings en de robuuste Ier McNiff zijn in Nieuw Zeeland op zoek naar Casper, de echtgenoot van Alice die daar 7 jaar geleden spoorloos verdwenen is. Na een lange reis vol gevaren komen ze uit in een donkere en mysterieuze grot, die hen naar het centrum van de aarde leidt. Daar vinden ze bewijzen dat Casper hier ook moet zijn geweest of misschien zelfs nog is. De vraag is alleen; leeft hij nog en zo ja, waar is hij dan? Wat het antwoord op deze vraag ook is, al gauw blijkt dat ze niet de enige levende wezens zijn in deze donkere uithoek van de aarde.
