Op een dag, tijdens het spelen van de online game Elder Tales, komen 30.000 spelers plotseling vast te zitten in een andere wereld. Daar blijft ook de achtjarige ervaren gamer Shiroe achter. De gevangen spelers leven nog, maar blijven in gevecht met de monsters. De spelers begrijpen niet wat er met hen is gebeurd en vluchten naar Akiba, de grootste stad van Tokio, waar ze in chaos terechtkomen. Ooit trots op zijn eenzame levensstijl, vormt Shiroe een gilde genaamd Log Horizon met zijn oude vriend Naotsugu, vrouwelijke huurmoordenaar Akatsuki en anderen.
